Baffin Bay
The above image, which is part of William Bradford's The Arctic Regions, is unique in that it was recorded during the first western journey to the Arctic intended purely for artistic purposes. During this journey to Baffin Bay and Western Greenland, William Bradford recorded over 140 images that highlight the undeniable beauty of the region. However, in addition to its magnificent scenery, Baffin Bay is also home to an incredibly rich history and culture. This site is intended to display artifacts that tell a piece of this vast story—a story that encompasses both the region's indigenous peoples and its western visitors.
To accomplish this, we selected three different topics that you can access using the links below: navigation & cartography, ships, and fishing & hunting. Each of these topics is then subdivided such that they can be explored within both a western and an indigenous context, with relevant artifacts and their descriptions provided for each.
