Navigation and Cartography

Baffin Bay has been the home of Inuit people for thousands of years and their knowledge of the land is evident in the maps and illustrations exhibited in this section. In the 1800s Western explorers took immense interest in Baffin because it was correctly believed that the Eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage was located somewhere in North Baffin Bay. The maps and illustrations in this section depict the varying perspectives and cartographic products of Inuit and Western individuals.
