New experiences at Dartmouth

In 1970 there was a transition in the college presidents from John Sloan Dickey to John George Kemeny. Marable mentions in the interview that Kemeny introduced new policies to adress students' needs and wants.  Kemeny introduced the D-plan and encouraged students' engagement with the international community through LSA foreign study programs. Marable recalls his experience going to Mexico on the LSA Foreign Study program for the Spanish department. He recalls living with a Mexican family and traveling to Heroica Veracruz while learning Spanish.  Marable mentions that there was no special encouragement for a specific group of students to engage with the program,  but the College allowed the student to follow their passions. He also mentions that the D-Plan allowed students to finish their requirements earlier for graduation and pursue jobs and internships otherwise not possible for them. The D-plan allowed him to land an internship in banking that helped with his career.
