About Dr. John F. Simmons Jr.
Dr. Simmons has had a very successful career as an oncologist. He attended Dartmouth in the mid-1960s when the college was an all-male institution and the country was in the midst of the civil rights movement. He discussed his experiences as one of a small number of Black students at Dartmouth and recalled events occurring at this time in Hanover. His account illustrates his family life and what it was like growing up with an LAPD [Los Angeles Police Department] father, who became a doctor, and how this influenced his career choice. His discussion references his good memories of the college, as well as a number of influential people in his life and what they mean to him in the present day.
