An Oral History with Monica Hargrove
In this oral history interview with Monica Hargrove ’76, we overview Monica’s family life and upbringing in Atlanta, Georgia amidst the Civil Rights Movement and desegregation of Atlanta Public Schools. Monica narrates her introduction and transition from an southern, all-black high school to Dartmouth as a member of the first coeducated class, detailing her process of adapting to student life in the Upper Valley. Being a member of the Afro-American Society (AAm) and an active participant on campus, Hargrove provides a timeline of the strategizing, formation, and presentation of the report "Institutional Racism and Student Life at Dartmouth" — informally trademarked "The Redding Report" — with coauthors Eileen Cave and Judi Redding while connecting her adolescent and college experiences to the faith that guided her spiritual and professional achievements.
