"A Voice Crying Out in the Wilderness:" Isolation and Inclusion at Dartmouth

“A Voice Crying Out in the Wilderness.” Dartmouth College’s motto is oddly representative of the Black experience at Dartmouth in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Through an oral history interview with Nelson Armstrong ‘71, the struggles Black students faced trying to fit in and find a sense of community are revealed. His account of specialized recruitment of black students, the Afro-American Society, and the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association (BADA) detailed efforts that led to more inclusion. Armstrong's life provides a unique perspective of Dartmouth as he has had contact with Dartmouth for many years as both a student and an employee.
