The Black Experience of Marable: An oral interview

During my interview with Mr. Marable, I discussed his childhood and how diverse his background was as a Black man growing up in New York. He grew up in a small town with a demographic mix that included  Italians, Jews, Blacks, and whites. He mentions in high school his studies were prioritized but football was his true passion.  He became the star in his high school, helping them win championships. He ultimately decided to attend Dartmouth to better himself.  He joined the football team at Dartmouth, dedicating enormous time to practice but also always focused on his studies. He struggled academically at the beginning but found his way to excel thanks to the support of Black faculty on campus.  Marable also depicts his differences with his peers and the struggle he had to adjust to New Hampshire. He found the Afro-American Society (AAm) a  safe place to recharge for African American students.

"Some people may have grown up having to work just to provide food for themselves. Some people grew up where all of the pleasures of life were provided for them because their parents are making a lot of money. But there is a middle and that's that is how I see my experience at Dartmouth."
