"What Does It Mean For You to Be Asian American?" Answers
-
Description
-
This is an excerpt from DAO's The Oracle Excerpt in Spring 2000. It features the question: "What does it mean for you to be Asian American?" and then student Michael J. Lee '02's response: "I guess being Asian American has always been this weird dichotomy for me where you're always walking this thin line. And being born in America, I feel like I'm never gonna be Chinese or Asian the way that people in Asia think of themselves, and yet, I'm never gonna be American the way Americans or white people think of themselves. And so, you're kind of caught between these two worlds where you're not sure where you stand. I've always had this image of myself kind of with one foot planted in American and one foot planted across the Pacific in Asia and I'm kind of balancing, trying not to fall over"
