Anti-Asian Hate at Dartmouth
Asian Americans and Asians at Dartmouth experience a wide range of discrimination and microaggressions, described by Nora Yasumura, former Advisor to Asian and Asian American Students, as "a thousand cuts." While this exhibition cannot showcase every instance of anti-Asian hate that occurred on campus, what we found in the archives and through our interviews highlight that the Asian American community has been “cut” many times, across decades.
We have divided our findings into two categories: incidents perpetrated through organizations, and incidents perpetrated by individuals. Regardless of how they were perpetrated, the incidents that Dartmouth has archived were public and grievous enough to attract widespread attention. However, we must recognize that there must have been many more incidents of discrimination against Asian American students that were not archived because they were not public or grievous “enough” to be remembered.
