2000 SAAP Annual Statistics Report

During her time at Dartmouth, Susan Marine played a crucial role in developing a new system of tracking demographic data in reports made to the SAAP. This system cross-referenced student reports with sexual assault peer advisors, deans, and program counselors, and compiled data from these direct sources to create the SAAP report.

In 2000, this disaggregated demographic data revealed alarming statistics in a landmark report: women in the Asian community reported a disproportionately large percentage of sexual assault cases on campus. In our interviews, alumni corroborated over and over that many women, especially Asian-Americans, struggled with the hugely prevalent sexual assault culture.

From the annual statistics report:

“From September 1996 - August 1997: Asian/Asian American women reported 40% of recorded sexual assault cases.

From September 1997 - August 1998: Asian/Asian American women reported 37% of recorded sexual assault cases.

From September 1998 - August 1999: Asian/Asian American women reported 30% of recorded sexual assault cases.

Asian/Asian American women were 12.3% of all undergraduate women at Dartmouth.”
