Exploring Vietnam War History through Oral History

Welcome! This website presents the work of eleven Dartmouth College students who came together during the Spring 2023 term to explore the history of the Vietnam War, using the theories and methods of oral history. 

Under the direction of Professor Edward Miller, each of us conducted an oral history interview with a member of the Dartmouth community.  The work we did was part of the Dartmouth Vietnam Project, an oral history project launched in 2014.

Our interviews this term included American Vietnam veterans who served in the war as helicopter pilots, radio operators, and logistics specialists; we also interviewed antiwar protestors who demonstrated against the war on Dartmouth’s campus, in Washington DC, and elsewhere; one of us even interviewed a journalist who covered the war in South Vietnam, and who visited and reported on a trip that he made to “Viet Cong”-controlled territory in 1973.

Our interviews (including transcripts) and the results of our research are presented in the following digital exhibits, which we designed and built with the expert support of Dartmouth librarians Laura Braunstein and August Guszkowski.
